New regulations for the clearing of over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives through central counterparties (CCPs) alone could increase demand for high-quality collateral to $2 trillion or more, according to some estimates. In response, some firms are aiming for a more universal approach to collateral management.

Many firms still take a rather old-fashioned view of collateral management. It is often fragmented and inefficient. Most firms operate collateral management in silos determined by geography or asset class. This can lead to poor communication between different collateral management functions ? for example, repo staff might not speak to the securities lending unit, or the New York office might not speak to its UK counterpart as much or as often as it should.?What banks have realised is that these inefficiencies must be addressed to meet coming demand for collateral management services. Banks have also realised that, in a world economy, where there are limited opportunities for business growth, effective and efficient collateral management could be a money spinner.

?Banks are taking this as a new area of focus to improve efficiency. ?It?s not just credit risk; it?s also liquidity risk and funding risks and other risks as well. That is not an accidental coincidence by the risk departments. They are big sponsors internally of some of the internal projects to patch together these silos simply because they?re aware of the opportunity to get a better view of their risk positions,? he said.

Vinnicombe said: ?Generally banks are a bit stuck for ways to make money. They are looking at efficiency, which is: ?are we using the money we have in the most efficient way?? Not many banks are at the point where they can boast being able to do funding on a firm-wide basis. Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley are said to be leading the market in this respect, but most other banks have considerable work to do.

Supply and demand matching

Already the industry?s big players in collateral management are seeking to improve their offering in response to regulatory changes. BNY Mellon has been one of the first to announce a new approach, with its global collateral services unit. The U.S. firm recently said it will bring its existing capabilities in segregating, allocating, finance and transforming collateral under the global collateral services banner.

?Each one of the constituents in the market place is going to have different drivers around the economics of posting collateral and the type of collateral. We?re helping our clients do the best job from an economic and risk standpoint to put to work the collateral they have against the obligations they have in the market place,? Kurt Woetzel, head of global collateral services at BNY Mellon told Thomson Reuters.

Firms such as BNY Mellon and JPMorgan, which have always been big players in the custody and collateral management businesses, should be well positioned to marry clients in need of collateral with those able to make it available. JPMorgan, for example, has roughly $16 trillion in assets in custody, which gives it a big data window showing who has the collateral other clients will so desperately need.

The Rt. Rev. Mark Joseph Lawrence, the Episcopal bishop of South Carolina, fears for the future of his church.

One week after the U.S. Episcopal Church overwhelmingly voted to approve a provisional rite for blessing gay unions and the ordination of transgender people, Bishop Lawrence said in an interview with NBC News that his denomination is moving too far out of the mainstream.

"Do I think that these two decisions will cause further decline? I believe they will," Bishop Lawrence said. "I think we've entered into a time of sexual and gender anarchy."

Lawrence's comments come amid a growing debate over the future of so-called mainline Christian churches: Episcopalians, Presbyterians, Methodists, some Lutherans and more. These denominations, which are generally more liberal than their evangelical counterparts, have been in decline for decades, a trend some observers attribute to their supposed leftward drift.

In a recent New York Times editorial, columnist and author Ross Douthat tackled the "looming extinction" of liberal Christianity, adding that: "Practically every denomination ? Methodist, Lutheran, Presbyterian ? that has tried to adapt itself to contemporary liberal values has seen an Episcopal-style plunge in church attendance."

Since 2000, the Episcopal Church has lost more than 16 percent of its membership. This decrease reflects a wider trend across most other Protestant denominations. In 2008, the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life reported that "the proportion of the population that is Protestant has declined markedly in recent decades."

As the Episcopal Church weighed gay-union rites last week, most of the Diocese of South Carolina?s delegation left the General Convention to show their concern.

"I had an issue of conscience in which I believed that a line had been crossed in the church?s teachings, that I could no longer pretend that nothing significant had happened," Bishop Lawrence said, adding that he has no intention of leaving the church, despite the walkout.

?It?s not merely a matter of adapting the Church?s teachings about Jesus Christ, about salvation, about right and wrong to the culture," he said. "The culture is adrift in sexual confusion and obsession.?

But Jenna Guy, an Episcopalian from Iowa, said when the gay-rites vote was taken that the issue is important to the younger generation of Episcopalians and that the resolution would bring more people into the church.

"It?s always with great pride that I tell [people] of the inclusive nature of this church,? Guy said.?

The Episcopal Church's approval of the rites makes it one of the more liberal churches on that issue.

• In May, the United Methodist Church, the largest mainline denomination in the United States with about 7.8 million members, voted against changing its definition of marriage as between a man and a woman.
• Earlier this month, the U.S. Presbyterian Church narrowly rejected a proposal for a constitutional change that would redefine marriage as a union between "two people" rather than between a woman and a man. The church, with around 2 million members, currently allows ministers to bless gay unions but prohibits them from solemnizing gay civil marriages.
• The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America defines marriage as "a lifelong covenant of faithfulness between a man and a woman" and has no official rite for same-gender unions.
• Standing out among the rest, the United Church of Christ, a mainline Protestant denomination with about 1 million members, voted in 2005 to support full civil and religious marriage equality for same-sex couples.

"I see other mainline denominations that are fairly liberal, like the Presbyterians and the Methodists, just really being very careful about jumping over this hurdle," David Hein, Hood College historian and co-author of ?The Episcopalians,? a history of the church, told NBC News, "because it really wreaks havoc with the denominations for the national headquarters on down, the institutions, the seminaries, the parishes when you start to lose huge numbers of members.?

"I think churches that are fairly clear in their stance and are not either fundamentalist or way out there on the fringe are doing pretty well," Hein added.

Steady decline in membership, however, is a problem across the board for mainline Protestant churches.

According to the National Council of Churches' 2011 report, membership in the UCC declined 2.8 percent to 1.1 million members over the previous year; the Presbyterian Church was down 2.6 percent to 2.7 million; the Episcopal Church was down 2.5 percent to two million members and the Evangelical Lutheran Church was down 2.0 percent to 4.5 million members.

The United Methodist Church's?membership has declined every year since it?was formed in 1968, according to a 2010 report commissioned by the denomination.

In the case of the Episcopal Church, Hein believes it "might not have been hemorrhaging so quickly " had it been more accommodating of its traditionalists.

?I think it?s a mistake that the Episcopal Church is not more welcoming of the mainstream attitude,? he said, adding that "these accommodations should really have been made five, seven years ago, because really about all that?s left of the Episcopal Church is the left wing of the Episcopal Church.?

In 2003, the election of the first openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church caused a deep rift between liberals and conservatives within the global Anglican Communion, with many churches leaving the U.S. and affiliating instead with the global Anglicans. The Episcopal Church is an independent church affiliated with the worldwide Anglican Communion.

"I still believe there is a broad and silent middle [within the Episcopal Church], I just don't know what it would take for them to stand up with moral courage and say, 'We don't believe this,'" Bishop Lawrence said.

Bucking the national trend, the Diocese of South Carolina experienced growth in 2011 in its average Sunday attendance, which rose 10.8 percent, from 11,086 to 12,286, according to the diocese.

In light of this sad turn of events, we've compiled a list of Do's and Don'ts for fans eagerly awaiting the return of Batman and the ending of a legend.

DO See the Movie Before Forming an Opinion
Here's a simple fact: You have no idea whether "The Dark Knight Rises" is good or not because you haven't seen it yet. No matter how much you love the first two films and all Christopher Nolan's other movies or how predisposed you are to liking this movie, you are entirely unable to form your own opinion, which, for all intents and purposes, is the only one that really matters to you. Just wait a few more days before you get on your soapbox to defend the final chapter, when you can actually cite evidence from the movie and engage in the real conversations that are so much fun with a movie like this.

From a story aspect, knowledge of the events and characters of the first two films matters for appreciation of the nuances, but it's also important to remember that "The Dark Knight Rises" is a carefully crafted closing to a trilogy. The impact of its emotional payoffs rests on everything that came before it. This story of Bruce Wayne picks up after the man has experienced everything that came before. The movie doesn't just ignore the past. The scars are still on Wayne's body and soul.

I'm not making a comment on the movie when I say that nothing bad will come of lowering your expectations. The nature of this series ? especially the mystery surrounding it ? has led to impossible expectations. Attempt to go in with nothing besides your curiosity, and you won't be disappointed.

DO Realize Each Nolan Batman Movie Is Different
Most filmmakers, Nolan included, are content with repeating themselves. This becomes a problem when you create a successful film franchise. To counteract that, Nolan has made three distinct films with their own tone, style and pacing. "Batman Begins" doesn't look like "The Dark Knight." "The Dark Knight Rises" isn't as bleak as "The Dark Knight." They each play to different rhythms. So expecting "The Dark Knight 2" will lead to disappointment. Enjoy the movie by itself and ponder how it fits in the trilogy.

1.????? Tell us a little bit about your background and how you became an author.

Hi and thanks for inviting me.? I'm an old man and have dabbled in fiction since I was fifteen or sixteen.? I received some tear-stained rejection letters from major magazines in my twenties, then went back to graduate school and got degrees in English and creative writing.? I published some stories in "little" magazines.? I quit writing at that point and eventually became six-year-old John's single parent.? We always did bedtime stories.? One night John up and presented me with a red crocodile named Crosley that he'd invented for an after-lights-out companion.? We started making up John and Crosley episodes, and Crosley got to be a real member of the family.? After a year or so, I started thinking about putting the two "Night Buddies" into a book.? I've done it twice now.

2.????? Tell us about your current book. Give a short summary. (You can follow this up with any points you hope readers will take away with them)

It's called Night Buddies and the Pineapple Cheesecake Scare.? It features young John Degraffenreidt who isn't ready to go to bed yet, and Crosley, a zany red crocodile who shows up to rescue him and sneak him out on an adventure.? It seems the whole world's supply of pineapple cheesecakes is disappearing, and since both buddies love the things, something's got to be done.? They take the subway to the great pineapple cheesecake factory and start their investigation.? Things get spooky from there.? Not only that, but Crosley is allergic to water and has to do the Black Bottom dance for hours anytime he gets wet.? Unless he takes his pills.

The second book is Night Buddies, Imposters, and One Far-Out Flying Machine and it starts the same way.? Some time has gone by and John is wide awake at bedtime again.? Crosley reappears and rescues him per their Night Buddies Amalgamated contract.? They borrow a really fantastic flying machine and fly off on their second adventure.? This book is much longer and is coming out this fall.

3.????? Can you tell us about your publisher and how the process worked in getting published?

It's an indie book and I'm the publisher, with the indispensible guidance of ?my Book Sherpa, Gail Kearns in Santa Barbara, CA.

4.????? How did you get the idea for this book?

As I mentioned, my son practically handed it to me.? Right there was this kid who needed something to do after lights-out, and right there was this zany character for him to do it with, so I only needed to figure out why Crosley happened to be red and then sneak them out of the house.

5.????? What is a typical writing day like for you?

Two hours or a little more, starting late in the morning.? Try for 500 words and redo once before quitting.

6.????? What do you enjoy most about writing?

Mark Twain said it: "I hate writing.? I love having written."

7.????? What is the most difficult part of writing?

I think it's sticking strictly to a schedule.? It takes determination with nothing else pushing you.

8.????? How has publishing a book changed your life?

Not at all for now.? The first title only hit the street on June 1st.

9.????? If your book is based on true events, how has that affected those around you?

10.? What are your plans now?

I need to launch the second book this fall.? Then I'd like to get going on the third one.? I've written just one page and can't figure how to get John out of his house.? He was in a tight spot there at the end of the last story.

11.? What is your best tip for aspiring authors?

12.? What advice can you give adults, children and/or teens as they prepare for life?

Such a question!? I'm definitely not a guru and would advise everyone to ignore any advice I might offer in this regard.

They're crocodiles, actually, and they sneak their charges out on late-night "programs."? (That's Night Buddies-speak for adventures.)? The buddies we are concerned with are John, of course; a smart, curly-haired, round-eyed city kid, and Crosley, a goofy crocodile in a yellow suit who carries a bunch of magic gadgets on his belt.? He is bright red because he is allergic to water.? Kind of.? In a roundabout way.? And he's a total fanatic about pineapple cheesecakes.? Pineapple cheesecakes are always a big deal whenever Crosley is around.

14.? Do you make school visits or do speaking/book signing engagements? If so, please describe a typical presentation.

This is in the works.? I used to do a fair number of animated school readings from an earlier version of the first book.? I like to sit on the floor and read and then talk to the kids.

Activists: Massacre in Syria kills more than 100

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian activists reported a new massacre late Thursday in the central Hama province, saying regime forces killed more than 100 people in shelling and other attacks.

There were few details on the attack, which was reported by the Local Coordination Committees activist group and the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The Observatory said it was aware of up to 100 killed from sources on the ground, but the group had only confirmed the names of 30 people so far.

Death tolls are nearly impossible to independently verify in Syria, where the government restricts journalists and where more than a year of violence has convulsed much of the country.

There were few details of the violence in Hama's Tremseh area.

Activists say more than 17,000 people have been killed since the uprising against President Bashar Assad began in March 2011, and he is coming under growing international pressure to stop the violence. But as the bloodshed continues, and the conflict morphs into an armed insurgency, hopes for a peaceful transition are dimming.

The latest report of violence came in the wake of the highest-level defector yet from President Bashar Assad's regime ? his ambassador to Iraq.

Defections from the Syrian regime have stirred hopes in the West Assad's inner circle will start abandoning him in greater numbers, hastening his downfall.

But the tightly protected regime has largely held together over the course of the 16-month-old uprising, driven by a mixture of fear and loyalty.

The latest official to flee, Ambassador Nawaf Fares, announced that he was joining the revolution, asserting Thursday that only force will drive Assad from power.

"There is no road map ever with Bashar Assad, because any plan, any statement that is agreed on internationally he delays on and ignores," Fares told the Al-Jazeera satellite channel. "There is no way that he can be pushed from power without force, and the Syrian people realize this."

Syria's Foreign Ministry denounced Fares, saying he should face "legal and disciplinary accountability."

In Washington, State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell hailed what he called the "first major diplomatic defection," adding: "We think this a wider sign that the regime is feeling the pressure. The pressure is up and the regime is really starting to fall apart."

Fares is the second prominent Syrian to break with the regime in less than a week. Brig. Gen. Manaf Tlass, an Assad confidant and son of a former defense minister, defected last week, but has not spoken publicly.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said Tlass has been in contact with the Syrian opposition. He would not comment on reports that Tlass was in Paris.

"I know that there is some closeness between the opposition and the general... Contact has been made," Fabius told journalists in Paris.

Assad's regime has suffered a steady stream of low-level army defectors, who have joined a group of dissidents known as the Free Syrian Army, now numbering in the tens of thousands. There have been several high-level defections in the past ? including a Syrian fighter pilot who flew his plane to neighboring Jordan during a training mission in June in a brazen move.

Although the defections are notable, Assad's regime has remained remarkably airtight, particularly compared with the hemorrhaging of Moammar Gadhafi's inner circle in Libya in 2011.

Within weeks of the Libyan revolt, a number of Libyan ambassadors and other high-ranking officials quit the government, and many joined the opposition leadership. The early defection of huge sections of the army in eastern Libya gave the rebel movement a safe zone where they could freely organize their political and military strategies.

Syria has seen nothing similar. Part of the reason is the loyalty of the armed forces.

Unlike the armies of Tunisia and Egypt, Syria's military has stood fiercely by the country's leader as Assad faces down an extraordinary protest movement.

Assad, and his father who ruled before him, stacked key military posts with members of their minority Alawite sect over the past 40 years, ensuring the loyalty of the armed forces by melding the fate of the army and the regime.

The army has a clear interest in protecting the regime because they fear revenge attacks and persecution should the country's Sunni majority gain the upper hand.

But besides the military's loyalty, another factor that constrains a flood of defections is fear. Open dissent is dangerous in Syria, a country that crushed any rumblings of defiance even before the popular revolt started to threaten the Assad family's 40-year dynasty. The security forces, which are the backbone of the regime and drive the culture of fear and paranoia, will protect the leadership at all costs.

Defectors fear not only for their own lives, but for those of any family members left behind. When deputy oil minister Abdo Husameddine defected in March, he said in a video statement that he fully expected government forces to "burn my home" and "persecute my family."

Already, the conflict is believed to have killed more than 17,000 people since the crisis began in March 2011, according to activists' estimates. Although the revolt began with protests, it has morphed into an armed insurgency with scores of rebel groups across the country clashing with government troops and attacking their bases and convoys.

On Thursday, Syrian forces shelled the suburbs of the capital, Damascus, to flush the rebels out from areas where they have established a foothold. Troops pounded Mezzeh and Kafr Souseh in eastern Damascus with mortars, sending residents streaming out, activists said. They also targeted the Liwan, Qadam and Daraya neighborhoods from a nearby military airport.

Explosions could be heard though much of the capital and amateur videos posted online showed huge clouds of smoke rising from the targeted areas. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported three dead in the area, among more than 45 people killed across Syria on Thursday. At least 11 were government soldiers, it said.

The reports and videos could not be independently verified.

Also Thursday, Human Rights Watch said it had found evidence the Syrian government had fired cluster bombs in an area near the central city of Hama. The New York-based group said the munitions are clearly identifiable in amateur videos posted online, and that local activists said the area has been under government bombardment for weeks.

Cluster bombs explode in the air and drop dozens of "bomblets" over a large area, but these often do not explode on impact. They remain explosive, increasing the threat of later injury to civilians.

As the conflict grinds on, U.N. officials are growing more pessimistic over prospects for a diplomatic solution to the crisis, even though Assad's main backers, Russia and China, have signed on to the idea of a transition to democracy in Syria.

Despite incremental progress, a senior U.N. official said the U.N. Security Council is deeply divided on Syria policy, with Western diplomats still uncertain whether Moscow is any closer to cutting its ties with the Syrian government or using its considerable leverage with Damascus to end the conflict on terms unfavorable to Assad.

With diplomacy near a standstill, the U.N. observer mission in Syria is serving as little more than a bridge between the United Nations and the Assad government, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss diplomatic maneuvering with media.

Subtle goal reminders, known as primes, can offset hedonic effects of food and facilitate health behavior

ScienceDaily (July 10, 2012) ? Research presented at the Annual Meeting of the Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior (SSIB) introduces novel cost-effective strategies to facilitate healthy eating among weight-conscious consumers. A number of experiments, by Esther Papies and colleagues of Utrecht University, The Netherlands, now suggest that simply adding words related to health and weight on posters, restaurant menu's, or recipe cards can stimulate healthy food choices among dieters and overweight individuals, in a variety of real-life settings.

Affecting the choices of these individuals is especially relevant since their eating behavior is heavily influenced by attractive food temptations which abound in our daily lives. The current living environment in most Western societies makes weight control a difficult enterprise for health-conscious individuals. Numerous studies have now revealed that conscious intentions for healthy eating and dieting are not sufficient for healthy eating pattern -- rather, consumers are heavily influenced by their eating habits, and by food temptations in their environment. Furthermore, people struggling with their weight are especially susceptible to the effects of such easily available food temptations. Chronic dieters and overweight people show strong hedonic responses to tasty, high-calorie food cues in both behavioral and neuro-imaging studies, and easily overeat when they are around attractive food. Thus, it is especially important to bolster these individuals against these detrimental effects of our "obesity promoting environment."

Previous research by Papies and colleagues has shown that priming methods can help dieters eat fewer high-calorie tasty snacks. In a field experiment, customers of a local butcher store were observed on days when a poster announcing a dieting recipe had been mounted on the door, and on other days when the poster was not present. When the diet recipe reminded dieters of their health goal, they ate less of the bite-size meat snacks the store offered than on other days. Customers who were not concerned with controlling their weight were not affected. Thus, goal priming is an effective strategy to help weight-concerned individuals translate their intentions into behavior, especially when faced with temptation .

More recent experiments have replicated this finding in different settings. A study now under review shows that subtle goal primes incorporated into the menu of a restaurant lead overweight and weight-concerned individuals to order more healthy meals, such as salads.

Most recently, this priming method was applied in a field experiment in a grocery store. Here, overweight and diet-concerned individuals who were handed a recipe flyer with health-related words before shopping bought less unhealthy snacks, such as chips, cookies, and cake. Interestingly, this was hardly affected by how much attention participants said they had paid to the recipes. It seems very little conscious awareness is needed for such primes to affect health behavior. Although preliminary, these findings are especially promising: food decisions made in the grocery store affect eating behavior at home, and that means the whole family could benefit.

This technique has great potential as an intervention to help weight control -- it is unobtrusive, easy to implement and low in cost making it attractive to policy makers.

NRA Asks Candidates to Choose: Us or GOP Leadership

The National Rifle Association wants Tennessee legislative candidates to declare whether they will back Republican leaders or the NRA next year if that's what it takes to put a controversial guns-in-parking lots bill up for a full vote, reports the Chattanooga Times-Free Press.

In a gun-issues survey sent to Republican and Democratic candidates, the NRA devotes two of 27 questions to the Safe Commute Act, which cleared most committees but never came up for House and Senate floor votes this year.

The NRA-backed bill, as amended, sought to block public and private employers' ability to bar workers, customers and most visitors from keeping firearms in locked vehicles on company property, provided the weapons are stored out of sight.

The survey asks candidates if they would support the bill and blames Republican leaders for blocking full House and Senate votes this year.

"As a legislator, would you follow the demands of party leadership even if they run contrary to the NRA's legislative agenda?" the survey asks.

In an interview, NRA spokesman Andrew Arulandandam called the survey question "pretty straightforward and self-explanatory."

"At the NRA we're not shy. We don't mince words," he said.

....House Majority Leader Gerald McCormick, R-Chattanooga, said the survey question "sounds like they were asking, 'Will you do what we tell you to do instead of sticking by leadership?'"

...When Democrats controlled the General Assembly, the NRA routinely criticized leadership for bottling up gun bills.

This election cycle, Democrats aren't shedding any tears for the GOP chieftains.

"It's the residue of the Republicans promising the moon [while in the minority], knowing they couldn't deliver anything" Senate Democratic Leader Jim Kyle of Memphis said. "And now that they're piloting the space shuttle, it's different."

Switching metaphors, Kyle said, "It's the chickens coming home to roost."
